yeah which idler?  only one i can think of could be air con haven't had a ac 20 for years tho. none on power steer or water pump/ alt belt.

If you mean the timing belt idler then your engine is fuct buy another engine.

you don't mean the harmonic balancer do you?

A picture tells a thousand words dude. I'm thinking the water pump bearings have collapsed and its thrown the belt.

That theory explains the major grinding sound for a split second then nothing. Bearings gave way. It doesn't explain why the engine died though, should have kept running.

A new pump is $80 or so plus fitting. But when you do the pump, you should really do the timing belt and idlers aswell. A timing kit is around $250 - $300 IIRC plus fitting.

There would be a good $400 in labour too. The reason you do the timing belt at the same time as the pump, as the timing belt has to be removed to access the pump. So you do them both, instead of 6 months later spending another $400 in labour to change the belt.

Lemme guess, you do not run a timing case.....like everyone said, sounds like a timing belt pulley.

Get a picture.....they we can tell you weather to start worrying or not...

Wow, that didn't help me at all. If you snapped a fan belt, air con belt of air conditioning belt, the engine should still start.

Sounds like you dont run a timing cover as Wheezy said. Sounds like one of the cams has seized and has sheared one of the timing pullys clean off. If this is the case, new engine time!

A good condition long motor will set you back around $1k. But you really gotta be very mechanically minded to know if your buying a good one or a shit one. There are a lot of fucked RB20's out there now...

Paying someone to change it out isn't going to be cheap im afraid, No matter where you go. Ask Decs from Garage 7.

I cant tell what that bolt is.....it looks like the bearing is above that bolt to the right, but I cannot for the life of me remember what would go where that bolt is...

Isn't one of the bolts for the water pump? That's what it looks like to me.
same thing happened to me once, but with a ham sandwich.
when i bought it the person called it a ham and cheese sub, but I wanted a sandwich, so what I was going to do was get a ham and cheese sandwich from the food truck and swap my ham and cheese over into it

thats correct lupes. the bolt to the left is the water pump one....the small circular bit to the right is where the pulley USE to be...and the belt has now moved across to the right due to no pulley being there to hold it.

Buy new engine, 100,000k service new engine, put it in :)
